Pocket Folding Keyboard

September 30, 2013

8109cIsSmdL._SL1500_Earlier this year my school gave out Ipads to every one in the school to help with education. Now we don’t need to carry around heavy books. But the Ipads did not come with keyboards. There is a keyboard on the screen that is too small and inconvenient. So I found a small, folding keyboard that works wirelessly and can fold into your pocket.

This is a very helpful and cool gadget. It can be rolled up and it can get water on it. Once you turn it on it can automatically connect to your Ipad. It has a very long battery life and can last for days. This keyboard is compatible with any computer that has blue tooth and it can also be plugged in.

It costs about $19.
This keyboard is made by Menotek

The FES Bike

July 13, 2013

I dedicate this blog post to my Dad.

Some of you may have heard that my dad was in a serious accident on April 21st that has left him paralyzed. He is currently staying at the Courage Center in Golden Valley, MN learning to eventually use his legs again.
The technology that I want to tell you about is called Functional Electrical Stimulation. Here is a picture of what a F.E.S. bike looks like. My dad has been using this technology. What this technology does is it stimulates your muscles through electricity. So even though my dad can’t moves his own legs he will be hooked up to these electrodes, which will stimulate the muscles in his legs to move so he can pedal the bike. There are many new technologies that are available today that were not available to people with spinal cord injuries even a few years ago. By using this  F. E. S. bike my dad will keep in muscles in use and that way when he starts to have feeling in his legs he will not have lost all of his muscle condition.

This technology is used for spinal cord injury patients, like my dad,  stroke victims and other  illnesses like MS or Parkinson’s.

Three Fun Games

July 3, 2013

2013-07-03 22:23:28 +00001This week we have three fun games for you,

The first is called Guess The Word. This game is a lot of fun to play. You get four pictures with something in mzl.lrxgilhq.320x480-75common  You are given a list of letter from which to make a word and the right amount of blanks. Some of the puzzles are not at all obvious and they take some real thinking to figure out what the word is.

If you can’t figure out a word you can get clues by using points that you have accumulated by playing the game.

This game is a good brain teaser it also is good to help you learn to spell words. This is a great game to pass time.

There is a free version of Guess Word so go check it out.

2013-07-03 22:14:03 +00001The next game is Kingdoms of Camelot Battle for the North. This game was suggested on this blog by Dylan D.mzl.qfpwlhcf.320x480-75

In this game you build fortresses and villages. You get achievements for building things and for training your knights.

You can be attacked by other cities or attack other cities.

Every day you get a random daily prize so you have an incentive to check in on your game every day.

You can build multiple cities and the game gets more complicated with each level.

This is a free game so check out Kingdoms of Camelot Battle for the North.

2013-07-03 22:12:05 +00001The third game that I am reviewing is called Conquist 2.

This is a game based on the popular board game Risk.  In this app you have four different version for four different ways to play; World domination where you have to conquer the whole world to win. Secret mission where it gives you a random secret mission to win, In colonization you start with one spot of land and you have to own all the capitols to win. And in Castle it is the same as world domination except that when you conquer the castle you get all of their armies.

You get to pick between eight different maps like roman empire, world and US.mzl.efptnfks.320x480-75

This game is a lot of fun and there is a lot of strategy involved. The game is especially hard when you battle against the higher level armies.

If you’ve ever played the game Risk or if you like military strategy you will probably like this game.

This game normally costs 2.99 but I got it free on Apps gone free, which I reviewed on one of my earlier posts. If you want to know more about finding free apps search my prior post about Apps gone free.

Capturing an Asteroid

April 17, 2013

nasa-logo1NASA plans to capture an asteroid!6a00d8341bf67c53ef014e8b2636e9970d-800wi

This is not science fiction – NASA has plans to launch a rocket carrying a probe that will go and capture an asteroid, drag it back towards the earth and put it in orbit around the moon.

The asteroid they plan to capture will be about 25 feet wide – anything bigger will be too heavy and too difficult to bring back. The probe will inflate a giant balloon around the asteroid, and then it will fire 2013-04-17 02:25:54 +00001its rockets to bring the asteroid towards the moon. When the asteroid is near the moon the probe will fire rockets one last time to send the asteroid into orbit, just like a satellite. You can watch a really cool animation of how they will do this by clicking on the picture at right.

You may wonder why they want to do this. The main reason is because they want to learn how to extract water and minerals from the asteroid. That’s important if we want to send people to Mars and other planets – then they don’t need to carry these things with them. And if we can start mining asteroids we can get a lot more minerals without digging up the earth.

asteroid-retrieval-kiss-studyThe other reason is that they want to learn how to deflect asteroids that may hit the earth and do a lot of damage.

This may sound like science fiction, but it will soon be science fact.

The Universal Translator is here

April 10, 2013

2013-04-10 01:46:54 +00001On the show Star Trek  they had a device that could translate between English and Klingon or any language. This was science fiction fiction back in the day, but fast -forward to startrek_undiscovered_picthe future and this device is available as an app on your phone and it is even free. Yes the future is now and you can translate between a number of common languages right on your phone using the app Jibbigo.

Here’s a link to a video of how the army uses a universal translator app.

This app can come in really handy if you are traveling out of the country and need to ask something that you didn’t yet learn in your middle school language class. If you want to use this app where internet is not available you can download a version of this app, this costs $9.99 for a four language pack – the European bundle which includes French, German, Spanish and Italian.

If you just want one language that costs $4.99 and the world bundle costs $24.99. This app is available for the iPhone, iPad and android.

The Printed Car

April 3, 2013

On my last post I wrote about 3D printing, this technology is definitely creating a lot of buzz – it was even featured on The Today Show last week.  Redeye printing, located in Eden Prairie, MN is URBEE Amaking a car called the Urbee 2. This cool concept car is printed on a 3D printer!!!

Here is a picture of the Urbee 2. This car was designed by Jim Kor of KOR Ecologic. The Urbee 2 is the first road-ready fuel efficient car built using 3D printing.

Here is a picture of me at the Redeye printing facility in Eden Prairie holding the bumper of the Urbee 2 concept car. One thing that is really cool about this car is that the entire car, minus the motor Karsten in factoryand electronics will consist of just 40 parts. A normal car has hundreds of parts.  So this picture isn’t just me holding the bumper it is also me holding the dash and all of the duct work that is part of the dash board.

This strong, lightweight car is designed to reach top speeds of 70 mph and will use a bio-fuel like pure ethanol. The designer’s goal is to drive the Urbee 2 from San Fransisco to New York using only 10 gallons of gas. This would set a new world record. The Urbee 2 is expected to be ready for its test drive in two years time.

3D printing is really cool.  Here’s a link to a video of how 3D printing works. They even print parts for NASA to use in space – you can watch a video of that here. If you saw Skyfall you may have seen James Bond’s famed Aston Martin blown up at the end of the movie. Well don’t worry, they didn’t really blow up the car, that was just another example of 3D printing. They made an exact replica of the Aston Martin.
