Lego Mindstorms

December 12, 2011

Last week I was on a special assignment for Northfield Middle School News at the brand new theme park – Legoland Florida. Thanks to the Lego company for the complimentary press passes.

You might think that Legos are for kids and aren’t very high tech, but did you know that Lego has a robotics division called Mindstorms. There’s even a boy scout merit badge for it.

Mindtorms are little robots that you can build and program very easily. I programmed a robot like this to do lots of cool stuff, like making it follow a path, shooting things down, and picking stuff up. They can do other things too – like sorting stuff, follow voice commands, figure out if something is hot or cold, and throw stuff.

Here I am in the Mindstorms lab programming a robot. If you get a chance you should try these robots out for yourself. It’s really cool and a lot of fun.

Legoland is a fun place. They have all kinds of cool things to see and do. Like this water skiing show.
